SUMMARY:Rescheduled Grasshopper Meadow Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Cascades flora expert Tanya Harvey as she leads a trip to Grasshopper Meadows\,  a very large sloping meadow north of Oakridge. We’ll make a loop around the flowery meadow on a faint trail and cut back down across the meadow\, so be prepared for some off-trail hiking. After a winter without snowpack\, the flowers in the mountains are well advanced\, so we’ll probably be seeing flowers that usually bloom much later in the summer. There should still be plenty of butterflies and other interesting pollinators. Bring lunch\, snacks\, and plenty of water. For more about the site\, visit https://westerncascades.com/sites/lane-county/grasshopper-meadows. Meet at South Eugene High parking lot (19th & Patterson) at 8:30 am or the Lowell covered bridge at 9:00 am to carpool. Sign up here

SUMMARY:Volunteer Outreach: Westmoreland Park Wetlands Enhancement Work Party
DESCRIPTION:We are beginning the sixth year of our work parties to remove invasive weeds in our two wet prairie remnants to the east and west of the Dr. Edwin Coleman Jr.\, Center in Westmoreland Park. On September 19\, volunteers will lay weed fabric on new plots and some plots for the second year\, and pull invasive weeds in areas selected by Parks & Open Space Ecologist Diane Steeck. There are tasks for all ages and physical abilities. \nEven this late in the summer\, there are still native plants in bloom. Come down and see the gumweed! These wetlands have protected status and are the largest population of two native plants anywhere in Eugene:  barestem biscuitroot and silverpuffs\, now in seed.  \nThank you to our partners\, Beyond Toxics\, Willamette Resources & Educational Network (WREN)\, and Native Plant Society\, Emerald Chapter\, for helping get the word out about our work parties. With the help of all our volunteers\, our project is showing success!  \nTo RSVP for the September 19 work party\, and/or to get on the list for updates on future work parties\, please contact fansustainability@gmail.com. Parks & Open Space brings all the tools so RSVP’ing allows us to let them know how many tools to bring. We meet on Polk St. south of the pickle ball courts on W. 20th. We hope you will join us!

SUMMARY:Ethical Foraging of Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:Foraging native plants offers a meaningful way to deepen our connection with the natural world\, but it also carries important responsibilities. In this presentation\, Steven Yeager will explore the principles and practices of ethical foraging\, with a focus on protecting plant populations\, preserving ecological integrity\, and relationships with the land. \nParticipants will learn how to identify opportunities for sustainable harvest\, assess the health and abundance of wild plant communities\, and minimize their impact on sensitive ecosystems. The presentation will also discuss common native species used for food\, medicine\, and craft\, along with practical guidelines for responsible collection. \nWhether you are new to foraging or an experienced herbalist\, naturalist\, or gardener\, this program will provide valuable insights for harvesting wild plants in a way that supports both people and the long-term health of the landscapes we depend upon.  \nAbout the Presenter: \nSteven Yeager was longtime instructor with the Columbines School of Botanical Studies and serves as Executive Vice President of Mountain Rose Herbs and is current President of NPSO. Drawing on decades of experience in herbal medicine\, native plants\, sustainability\, and conservation\, he is passionate about promoting responsible stewardship of wild plant populations and fostering deeper connections between people and place.

SUMMARY:Aquatic and Emergent Native Plant Establishment
DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear from Laurie Holts\, City of Eugene Ecologist\, about a novel project. From 2018 through 2021\, the City of Eugene and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife planted over 2\,000 native aquatic and emergent plants at Golden Gardens Park. Learn how this novel project experimented with different planting techniques for diverse species\, protected plants from voracious herbivores\, and played an important role in helping the Northwestern Ponds Turtle population at Golden Gardens thrive.
